Mr. Hellmers devotes his practice to nearly all aspects of professional liability defense, primarily representing hospitals, doctors, and healthcare providers in medical malpractice and healthcare matters. He has developed unique experience defending civil rights and deliberate indifference claims against medical providers who work in the correctional environment. As to other professionals, Mr. Hellmers has an active practice defending architects, engineers, and insurance professionals in professional liability matters and employment practices litigation.
Given the sensitive nature of professional liability claims, clients often consult him before litigation arises for early investigation, evaluation, and intervention. Professionals also seek his advice for managing the impact of a claim on their practice, and he works closely with his clients to develop a litigation strategy for going to trial or negotiating a resolution. Mr. Hellmers focuses on helping clients find creative strategies to end litigation, and he gives regular continuing education presentations on current legal issues and risk management.
Originally from the New Orleans area, he attended Jesuit High School and Loyola University. After finishing his undergraduate degree at Loyola, he worked with St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company as a Claims Specialist handling medical malpractice and significant commercial exposure claims. Mr. Hellmers later graduated magna cum laude from Loyola Law School.
