Summer Associates and The Summer Program

The Full Experience

Our summer associate program is integral to the growth of the firm as it is our principle method of recruiting new attorneys. We aim to provide summer associates with meaningful experience and, most importantly, a true sense of the practices and personality that make up Frilot L.L.C. In return, the summer program gives us an opportunity to evaluate each summer associate's work product, work ethic and overall fit with the firm.

A key objective of the firm that is of focus at all times is carried into our summer program. This is to provide a collegial and challenging learning environment where our associates can discover and develop their abilities and interests. We think that the best way to achieve this objective during the summer program is to jump in with both feet and experience all that the firm has to offer.

The structure of the summer program provides summer associates with the freedom to explore the firm’s various practice areas. While we see that summer associates receive significant experience in their specified practice areas of interest, we also encourage them to gain exposure to a variety of practice areas and to work closely with many different attorneys. We have found that summer associates often discover an interest in an area of law that they knew little or nothing about before receiving work assignments or having meaningful interactions with attorneys in that area.

Program Dates
Our summer associate program is typically divided into a “first half” and “second half” program, starting around the middle of May and ending in the middle of August. Participants are required to work for six consecutive weeks within this time period.

Mentors
We want our summer associates to have a positive and rewarding summer experience from the start and pair each associate with a mentor who offers guidance and support throughout the summer. Mentors are typically younger associates who practice in an area of particular interest to the summer associate. They act as a source of information on all aspects of the summer program and the firm.

Work Experience

We aim to give summer associates a well-rounded and realistic sense of our practice, our approach, and our people. Summer associates work on challenging projects that would otherwise be handled by our junior associates. We believe you learn best by doing. Throughout the course of the summer you will assist firm members in responding to clients’ needs and problems by researching and analyzing significant legal issues; drafting pleadings and memoranda; and assisting attorneys in their preparation for depositions and trials. The Recruiting Coordinator, along with the mentors, monitor the summer associates workloads to ensure that they receive a range of work and that they are always challenged and never overwhelmed.

The summer experience also includes opportunities to observe good lawyers in action in depositions, mediations, client meetings and court hearing and trials. With many of the courts in walking distance from the office, summer associates are given frequent chances to experience such opportunities.

Jumping into the summer program and experiencing all of the new opportunities at hand may seem daunting at first, but we almost always find that summer associates leave our program with not only meaningful experience but also a stronger sense of confidence and ability with the practice of law.

Fun Times
To accurately gain a sense of all aspects of the firm, social events are scheduled for summer associates to interact with attorneys and their families in informal settings and to show them another reason why we enjoy working with one another. While many events are planned, impromptu lunches, golf outings and after-work get-togethers also fill the summer schedule. These experiences help everyone relax, build camaraderie and ensure that the Frilot summer experience is memorable.

Join Us

We carefully select our summer associates and strive to hire in anticipation of upcoming needs for entry-level attorneys. Currently, we take part in on-campus interviews at various law schools in the region to select our summer associates. However, we also actively recruit law students from other schools across the country and ask qualified students to send us their resume. While a strong academic record is very important, we also seek individuals possessing a strong work ethic, proficient writing and communication skills and an adaptive and approachable personality.
