Frilot attorney and Jefferson Parish School Board member Ellen Shirer Kovach was elected district judge for the 24^th Judicial District Court, Division K on November 4,2008.  Kovach defeated incumbent Martha Sassone, with Kovach taking 63 percent of the vote to Sassone’s 37 percent.  Kovach won 40 of the district’s 41 precincts and lost one precinct by only one vote.  Kovach’s election marks the first time in 84 years that voters have ousted a sitting judge on that bench.  Kovach was honored to have the strong support of Sheriff Newell Normand and Jefferson Parish Chiefs of Police Steve Caraway, Arthur Lawson, Peter Dale, Pancho Munch and Mary Jo Hargis.  She will take the bench effective January 1, 2009.
